2006 Dodge Durango Timing Cover Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service the Timing Cover and Chain on 2006 Dodge Durango?
A: The first step in servicing the timing chain is to take off the battery negative cable and empty the cooling system. Take off the electric cooling fan and the fan shroud assembly, then removing the radiator fan. Take off the heater hose at the timing cover and the lower radiator hose under the engine. Following that, disconnect the accessory drive belt tensioner assembly (1), crankshaft damper, generator and A/C compressor. The 3.7L engine relies on a sealer, not a gasket, around the front cover and so installers must use Mopar Grey Engine RTV sealant. The water pump won't need to be removed for you to take out the timing cover. Then, unwind the bolts that are holding the timing cover onto the engine block and remove the timing cover. Before installing, clean the cover and block with rubbing alcohol to keep them from becoming damaged by oil or abrasive cleaners. Look for damage on the water passage O-rings (2) and change them if they're defective. Set a 3 to 4mm thick layer of Mopar RTV sealer to the front cover before installing the cover and fastening it down in sequence up to 58 Nm (43 ft. lbs.). Replace the crankshaft damper, A/C compressor, generator and accessory drive belt tensioner. Connect the upper and lower radiator hoses, the hoses for the heater and the radiator fan. After that, fill the cooling system and secure the negative battery cable.
