2006 Dodge Ram 1500 Fuel Rail Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service a Fuel Rail on a 3.7L V-6 Engine on 2006 Dodge Ram 1500?
A: Be sure to release all pressure from the fuel system before you work on the fuel rail on a 3.7L V-6, since it isn't fully off even when the engine is stopped. When changing the left and right fuel rail as an assembly, do not try to detach their halves where the lines connect, as clamps are not used; be careful not to bend or kink these lines while it is installed. Take out the fuel filler tube cap in the first step and follow it with the fuel system pressure release steps. Remove the negative cable from the battery, get rid of the air duct and air box at the throttle body and disconnect the air resonator mount using two bolts. Remove the fuel line latch clip and the fuel line from the fuel rail, either manually or using a Clinton special tool and also take out any necessary vacuum tubes at the throttle body. Separate the fuel injector harness connectors from all six injectors by pushing the red switch and releasing the tab on each connector. While doing so, look at the tags on the factory wiring harnesses (INJ 1, INJ 2, etc.) to help identify them. Take out the electrical connections at each throttle body sensor, remove the six ignition coils and detach the four bolts from the fuel rail mounts. Sway the fuel rail slightly and pull on its left side until the fuel injector holes clear the head, do the same on the right side until all holes are clear. Take off the fuel rail, with the injectors on it and if you need to, also remove the injectors. When putting in the injectors, make certain the intake manifold bore is clean and use a little engine oil on the O-rings of each injector for easy installation. Alignment the fuel rail/fuel injector assembly over the openings machined in the cylinder head, making sure to gently position the injectors to save the O-rings. Have both sides of the fuel rail push down until the injectors are resting properly on the head, then assemble the rail bolts and tighten them. Replace all six ignition coils and plug the connectors into both the throttle body and fuel injectors, so they are securely connected. Restore the vacuum lines, attach the air resonator bracket, link the fuel line latch and main line to the fuel rail and set the air box and duct into place. At the end, reattach the battery cable, start up the vehicle and see if there are any leaks.
