2006 Dodge Ram 2500 Power Steering Pump Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Effectively Service and Repair a Power Steering Pump on 2006 Dodge Ram 2500?
A: Shut off the engine and check the power steering pump's fluid level with Atf+4 from Mopar, since using any other fluid can cause damage. Make sure the filler cap is clean before you check the dipstick which should read Cold at normal temperature. Full-left the steering wheel, be sure to fill up the reservoir to its highest level (Hot) and begin the engine while not using the steering wheel. Shut off the vehicle, check the fluid and make sure it is Full Cold. Crank the engine a few more times, letting it start just enough to stop again and then check the fluid. Re-ignite the engine and keep it running, but don't move the wheel, for about five minutes after applying a 20 in-Hg vacuum to the reservoir if you can. When the engine is off, take a second look at the coolant level to make sure it says Full Cold. If you've replaced the steering gear, ensure the reservoir has Hot at the top, then start the engine, rotate the wheel to the left, stop it and reexamine the steering gear fluid at Full Hot. Thereafter, while the engine is off, turn the wheel to the right, restart it, let it idle and see if the level is set at Full Cold. Pour flush or brake fluid to the correct level in the reservoir and let it sit for two minutes before turning the engine on and checking the reservoir. First, elevate the front wheels and without starting the engine, rotate the steering wheel all the way left, then all the way right 20 times, helping check the fluid. Lift the car slightly, so the front wheels are off the ground, idle the engine for two minutes and verify the pump running quietly and properly with the steering wheel. In case the liquid becomes very foamy or appears milky, take the vehicle off the hose for a while and try the process again, being sure to avoid running the vehicle with the foamy solution to avoid problems with the pump.
