2006 Dodge Ram 2500 Universal Joint Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Maintain and Fix Universal Joints in a Double Cardan System on 2006 Dodge Ram 2500?
A: Before working on the Universal Joints-Double Cardan, uninstall the propeller shaft, place marks on it and on the two yokes, to assist with assembly. Use a drift to whack the outside of the bearing cap assembly and loosen the snap rings and then discard all the bearing cap snap rings and grease fittings if the engine includes them. Attach the larger socket to the press through the link yoke and use the smaller socket above the bearing cap. Press the bearing cap found on the outboard side of the link yoke until you can clamp onto it with the vise jaws, then tap the link yoke with a mallet to remove the cap. After flipping the assembly, follow the steps again to release the second bearing cap, remove the cross centering kit assembly and spring and remove the remaining bearing caps from the surplus end of the link yoke. While assembling, position the alignment marks on the link yoke and propeller shaft yoke correctly against each other. Coat the inside of the yoke bores with grade 1 or 2 EP N.L.G.I. grease, drop the cross into the propeller shaft yoke and slide the bearing cap on the trunnion, making sure the needle bearings stand upright. Depress the bearing cap until it is clear of the snap ring notch and slip the snap ring in place. Turn the propeller shaft yoke so that the ring fits on the other trunnion and then put a snap ring around it. Next, put the link yoke on the final trunnions, secure the bearing caps using a press and fit the snap rings around the bearing caps. Set the centering kit assembly in the link yoke, making certain that the spring has been put in the right spot. Put bearing caps on the remaining cross's unconnected trunnions, fit the open trunnions into the bores in the link yoke and insert the bearing caps into the centering kit. Aircraft vibrations due to wind or engine operation may cause the bearings in a sealing device to wear unevenly which can produce irregularities in the soft seals. Legacy kits may take a little extra effort to adjust these joints, so after assembly, flex them to the sides to make sure the joint clicks overcenter on each side and then add the propeller shaft.
