2006 Dodge Ram 3500 Automatic Transmission Filter Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair an Automatic Transmission Filter in the 42RLE 4-Speed Transmission on 2006 Dodge Ram 3500?
A: To work on the 42RLE 4 Speed Automatic Transmission, just use Mopar ATF+4 Automatic Transmission Fluid in the transmission sump and you should also replace the filter during every oil change. If you disassemble the transmission, always replace the fluid and the filter too. First, bring up the vehicle using a hoist, then slide a drain container underneath the transmission oil pan. Factory sealing material is applied to one of the bolts that attaches the pan to the bottom of the engine and that patch should be separated so it can be used again. Loosen the bolts on the pan and strike one edge of the pan to let fluids out, before taking off the oil pan entirely. Change the filter and o-ring for the new ones at the valve body bottom and adjust the retainer screws to 5 Nm (45 inch lbs.). After placing the hole patch squarely over the new bolt hole, seal it by placing Mopar Lock & Seal Adhesive inside. Carefully clean the oil pan and magnet, then add the new sealant, install the oil pan and tighten every bolt to 20 Nm (14.5 ft. lbs.). Insert four quarts of Mopar ATF+4 into the dipstick hole, then run the engine for about a minute while it idles. While parking and service brakes are engaged, slide the selector lever through all its positions and end up in park or neutral. Make sure the transmission fluid is at 3 mm (1/8 inch) below the lowest mark on the dipstick. After the transmission gets to its regular working temperature of 82°C (180°F), make sure the clearance has not decreased. Be sure the dipstick is safely in the dipstick tube so that no dirt reaches the transmission.
