Raise the vehicle on supports safety and position a large shallow drain pan beneath the transmission, then service or replace the fluid filter for the 45rfe 4 Speed/545rfe 5 Speed transmission. Remove the front and side bolts from the transmission, loosen those at the back and gently remove the front of the pan so juice can flow into the pan. When the pan is resting evenly, take out the final bolts and pull the pan from the transmission, draining what's left of the fluid into the drain pan. After, remove the main
Oil Filter screw (1) from the valve body, take out the filter and pour the remaining fluid from it into the drain pan. Review the oil filter seal at the oil pump; if you find it isn't complete or damaged, throw it away, but if it's fine, you might be able to reuse it. When changing the part 2, take out the cooler return filter using Oil Filter Wrench 8321 and properly throw away the old transmission fluid and used oil filters. Look at the bottom and magnetic part of the pan for a thick layer of metal; a small amount of clutch dust is normal unless it causes the car to slip or not shift smoothly. Rinse the pan and the magnet using a suitable solvent and remove the original seal from both the transmission case and pan with a gasket scraper. When fitting, place the primary seal of the oil filter so that it is flush against the oil pump so that it doesn't go on the neck of the filter. Should the seal wear out, install a new primary seal in the oil pump bore using the right equipment. Put the replacement filter into place on the valve body and into the oil pump and install the screw to hold down the primary oil filter (1), setting the torque to 4.5 Nm (40 inch lbs.). Should you need to, swap the cooler return filter and then adjust the screws to 9.5 Nm (7 ft. lbs.). Put some Mopar Rtv sealant on the transmission case, place the pan back on the transmission, tighten the bolts to 12 Nm (105 inch lbs.), lower the vehicle and pour Mopar Atf +4 into the transmission.
