2006 Dodge Sprinter 2500 Timing Cover Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Perform a Timing Cover Service and Repair on a Cylinder Head Front Cover on 2006 Dodge Sprinter 2500?
A: Before removing the cylinder head front cover, first remove the negative battery cable and then the engine cover and cylinder head cover. Subsequently, remove the timing chain tensioner, but do so in a clearly ventilated spot that's free from ignition sources to guard against getting burnt and contamination with fuel. When that's done, take out the vacuum pump and all the front cover bolts, as the bottom section is sealed with RTV sealant, so gently pull the front cover away from the cylinder head. Lift the top guide rail's pawl to remove the cylinder head front cover, but don't move the dowel pins as they help preserve the seal when you put the parts back together. When installing, clean the mating surfaces, add sealant to the places you marked with a bead that is 1.5 to 0.5 mm high and put on the front cover in just 10 minutes, without spreading any sealant. Place the front cover on the guide pins, attach the bolts through them and tighten each bolt to 14 Nm (124 inch lbs.). Replace the vacuum pump and timing chain tensioner with a new gasket and secure the negative battery cable once more. After starting the engine, examine for leaks while paying attention to the warnings in the fuel system and staying away from moving engine parts.
