2006 Jeep Commander Axle Shaft Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair an Axle Shaft on a C213R Rear Axle for Rear on 2006 Jeep Commander?
A: To begin servicing and repairing the rear axle C213R, set the vehicle on a hoist while in neutral position. Next, remove the calipers and rotors, followed by tapping the end plug out with a hammer and punch from the axle's flange. After that, remove the sensors from the axle flange and unscrew the nuts from the axle end. Remove the axle shaft and backing plate, letting the axle tube extend about an inch, so you can remove the O-ring from the axle bearing. Remove the axle shaft from the axle tube and backing plate, then drop it out of the bearing using a hammer and brass drift through the hole in the plug. To install the axle, press the shaft into the bearing and flange, then put the shaft in the tube and backing plate and replace the O-ring. Place the O-ring through the backing plate and push the axle through, until the bearing is visible, then slide the O-ring onto the axle bearing. Place the axle into the axle tube, put the flange nuts on and tighten them to 119 Nm (88 ft. lbs.). Set the speed sensors back on the axle tube flange, cover a new axle flange plug with Mopar Stud N' Bearing Mount Adhesive, insert the plug into the axle tube flange using a freeze plug installer. Once you are done, replace the calipers and rotors.
