2006 Jeep Commander Ball Joint Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Lower Ball Joint on 2006 Jeep Commander?
A: First, take the tire, wheel assembly, brakes, caliper and rotor off in order to service and repair the lower ball joint. Separate the tie rod from the steering knuckle using special tool C-3894-A and bring the upper ball joint away from the knuckle using special tool 8677. Take the lower ball joint off the steering knuckle by using tool 8677 and then take out the steering knuckle. In a 4X4, take out the clevis bracket and position the halfshaft so it sits off to the side, making space for you to work. Lubricating the threaded parts of your tools with a lot of pressure will help them last and work correctly. Use special tools C-4212-F (PRESS), C-4212-3 (Driver) and 9654-4 (Receiver) to compress the ball joint from the lower control arm. For installation, use oil on the treaded sections of the tools a second time, then put the ball joint into the control arm and secure it with special tools C-4212-F (press), 9654-1 (Driver) and 9654-2 (Receiver). Put a chisel into the ball joint flange and hammer it down at each of the four regular places around the ball joint flange. Take off the halfshaft support and reinstall it and then fit the clevis bracket if your car is a 4X4. Set the steering knuckle and the tie rod end into the steering knuckle. When the vehicle is equipped, tighten the halfshaft nut to 251 Nm (185 ft. lbs.), reinstall the brake caliper and rotor, before placing on the tire wheel assembly. After doing everything else, adjust the vehicle's ride height and wheel alignment.
