2006 Jeep Commander Drive Belt Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Maintain and Repair the Drive Belt on a 3.7L Engine on 2006 Jeep Commander?
A: Before beginning service or repairs on the accessory drive belt, first disconnect the negative battery cable. Turn the tensioner until it touches the end of its motion before slowly pulling out the belt. Properly route your new belt by finding and following the Belt Routing Label in the engine compartment so that the engine does not become too hot because of incorrect water pump movement. Examine every pulley to see if it's good condition, then route the new belt around all pulleys except for the idler pulley. Rotate the tensioner arm to reach the end position and then fit the belt onto the idler pulley and have the tensioner grab it. Makes sure the belt is correctly sited on every pulley. After that, check the belt wear indicator; the distance between the tang and the housing end should not be greater than 24 mm (0.94 inches) for a 3.7L engine.
