2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee Battery Cable Parts and Q&A

  • Q: What Are the Best Practices for Maintaining Battery Cables on 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
A: It is important to switch off the ignition and disable every electrical accessory before touching the battery cables. If there is no battery, pull the negative cable terminal clamp from the terminal post using a puller. Pull open the cover over the positive cable terminal contact bolt, release the cable line from the battery terminal post with a puller, if you need to and disconnect the cable. Take out the screw from the battery negative cable, open the Power Distribution Center and Integrated Power Module cover and remove the screw securing the battery positive cable eyelet terminal to the inner fender. Take the two nuts that hold the positive cable terminal on the battery to the B(+) terminal studs in the PDC. Remove the nut that holds the same terminal to the B(+) terminal stud on the IPM. Then remove the positive battery cable eyelet terminals. Cut the battery cable from the three pin connector at the battery tray. For those engines, let go of the connector between the generator output stud and the eyelet terminal nut, then detach the battery wire harness connector from the receptacle on the generator field terminal. For engines with a 5.7L size, connect to the generator power cables as described above. Put the vehicle under a hoist, release the bolt connecting the battery's negative wire to the engine block, release the nut holding the battery positive cable to the starter solenoid stud and unplug the wire harness connector from the starter solenoid. Disconnect the battery wire harness retaining clips on the engine and eliminate the battery wire harness from the engine compartment. For the installation, first clean the battery cable terminal and battery posts, position the wire harness in the vehicle and then use a hoist to raise the harness into place. Attach the battery wire harness retaining clips to the engine, snap the wire harness connector onto the starter solenoid and install the battery positive cable eyelet terminal onto the stud marked B(+) on the starter solenoid, tightening the nut to 11 N.m. Next, attach the battery negative cable ground eyelet terminal to the engine block, tighten it with a bolt to 10 N.m and lower the vehicle. Use the clamps supplied with the battery wire harness to secure it to the valve cover studs, then attach the battery wire harness connector to the generator field connector receptacle if you have a 5.7L engine and finally fasten the generator output cable eyelet terminal to the generator's output terminal stud, applying 14 N.m of tightening pressure to the nut. For 3.7L and 4.7L engines, join the battery wire harness connector to the generator field terminal connector receptacle and fit the generator output cable eyelet terminal, tightening its nut to 14 N.m. Then, position the battery wire harness retaining clip onto the valve cover stud and attach the battery wire harness three pin connector to the battery tray. Attach both positive battery cable eyelet terminals to the B(+) studs on the PDC and IPM and tighten their nuts to 11.5 N.m. Close and lock the covers on the PDC and IPM and then screw in the negative cable eyelet terminal at the fender. Connect the battery positive cable clamp to its post on the fuse box, tighten the pinch-bolt hex nut to 5.5 N.m and secure its cover. Reconnect the negative side of the battery cable to its negative terminal, making sure to tighten the pinch-bolt hex nut to 5.5 N.m and add a small amount of petroleum jelly or chassis grease to all the clamp and post places that will be exposed after the battery is connected.
