2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee Timing Cover Parts and Q&A
Q: How to service a timing cover on 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
A: First, take off the negative battery cable and drain the coolant. First, pull out the electric cooling fan and its shroud and then pull out the radiator fan. Detach the hoses on the timing cover from the heaters and remove the lower radiator hose from the engine. After that, take out the accessory drive belt tensioner assembly (1), crankshaft damper, generator and A/C compressor. Mopar Grey Engine RTV sealant should be used with the 3.7L engine because the front cover is sealed without a gasket, but with an anaerobic sealing compound. Water pump removal is not needed when installing a timing cover. With bolts removed, take away the timing cover from the engine block. While installing, make sure to both the timing chain cover and block surface with rubbing alcohol to avoid any oil and damage to the surface by using abrasive tools. Examine the O-rings in the water passage (2) and replace when found damaged. Put a 3 to 4mm thick line of Mopar Engine RTV sealer on the front cover, install the cover and tighten the fasteners in order, using 58 Nm (43 ft. lbs.) force. Fit the crankshaft damper, A/C compressor, generator and the accessory drive belt tensioner. Fit the upper and lower radiator hoses, put in place both heater hoses and attach the radiator fan. Once done, fill the cooling system and attach the battery negative cable.
