2006 Jeep Wrangler Camshaft Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Remove and Reinstall a Camshaft on 2006 Jeep Wrangler?
A: Take off the cylinder head cover, next remove the camshaft position sensor and finally remove the camshaft target magnet. After that, take off the timing belt, then the camshaft sprockets and timing belt rear cover. The outside bearing caps should be identified first, even before the first cap is removed. Take off the camshaft bearing cap fasteners in the sequence shown, remembering that camshafts are not the same and the wider thrust bearing face spacing is on intake cam #6. First, note the camshafts and then pull them out of the cylinder head. You should mark all the rocker arms before removal so they can be installed back in their original places. Wipe down the camshaft with a solvent recommended for this purpose. Be sure to inspect the camshaft bearings, the cylinder head for damage and check that the oil holes are not blocked. Review the cam lobe and bearings for any damage or extra wear and change the camshaft if you find any defect. Check the lobe wear using a standard of 0.0254 mm (0.001 inch) and a maximum of 0.254 mm (0.010 inch); if it's over limit, replace the camshaft. During the installation process, don't allow any of the pistons to hit top dead center. Place lubricant on all bearing journals of the camshaft, the rocker arm assemblies and on the camshaft lobes before installation. Place camshaft pins in the cylinder head bearing journals and fit the bearings (caps No. 2 - 5 on the right and left, cap No. 6 on the right side) and tighten the six M6 bolts to 12 Nm (105 inch lbs.) following the instructions. Put the Mopar Gasket Maker on the bareings caps marked No. 1 and No. 6, install them and fasten them with the 28 Nm M8 bolts. The end caps need to be installed first, before placing the seals. After installing the pneumatic lifters, set the camshaft oil seals, then attach the camshaft target magnet and camshaft position sensor, add the cylinder head cover and add the timing belt rear cover and camshaft sprocket followed by the timing belt.
