2006 Jeep Wrangler Timing Cover Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Maintain and Fix a Timing Cover on 2006 Jeep Wrangler?
A: The first stage in repairing or servicing the timing belt cover is to take out the crankshaft vibration damper and the assembly that holds the generator drive belt. After that, remove the bolts that hold the timing belt front cover and take off the covers. First, remove the front cover from each side and then remove the timing belt. Use Special Tool 6847 to support the camshaft sprocket as you remove the center bolt and after that, the timing belt idler pulley. With those steps out of the way, take out the fasteners from the rear cover and lift it off the engine. The rear timing belt cover and bolts should be installed and tightened to 12 Nm (105 inch lbs.) first during installation. Be sure to tighten the camshaft sprocket bolt by hand with a wrench as tightening it with any other tool could easily break the timing locating pin. Attach the camshaft sprockets and camshaft target ring, holding them with Special Tool 6848 and fasten the center bolt to 101 Nm (75 ft. lbs.). Then, ease the timing belt idler pulley into the mechanism, tighten the bolt to 61 Nm (45 ft. lbs.) and then put in the timing belt and accessory drive bracket. When done, fit the front covers and cement in the fasteners to 7 Nm (60 inch lbs.) and after that, attach the generator drive belt tensioner and crankshaft vibration damper.
