2007 Dodge Nitro Camshaft Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Safely Remove the Left Camshaft on 2007 Dodge Nitro?
A: Before removing the left camshaft, confirm that the timing chain isn't rotating separately, as this may badly damage the valves and pistons. Always use Special Tool 8379 while taking off the cam sprocket, timing chains or camshaft to stay clear of overextending the tensioner ratchet which may require you to open the timing cover to fix. At first, take out the cylinder head cover and arrange the engine such that cylinder #1 reaches its highest point, aligned with the corresponding marks on the camshaft sprocket at the 12 o'clock mark. Place one mark on the secondary timing chain on each camshaft sprocket above the V6 mark for easy installation. Don't force your fingers into the camshaft target wheel which could cause things to break and make the engine fail to start. Make sure the sprocket retaining bolt is loose, but keep it still touching the sprocket. Fix the tensioners for the timing chain before you take out the camshaft sprockets, as this will support the chain and you won't have to change the timing chain cover to set them straight. Instead of hitting the tensioner arm, insert Special Tool 8397 between the tensioner arm and timing chain and tap it to secure the chain in place as it passes the tensioner arm. Keep Special Tool 8428 Camshaft Wrench on the camshaft while you loosen and remove the bolt and sprocket from the camshaft. Raise the camshaft two revolutions clockwise to neutralize all valve flow. Screw the camshaft bearing cap bolts out by 1/2 turn moving from the outside to the center until all pressure on the bearing caps is relieved and avoid striking or stumbling on the bearing caps. Remember that rocker arms can droop on their own when the camshaft is not present, so mark them first. Afterward, take out the camshaft bearing caps and the camshaft.
