First, remove the cylinder head cover and rotate the engine to TDC for cylinder No. 1, so that the camshaft sprocket V6 marks show at 12 o'clock. When installing the secondary
Timing Chain, crossmark between one link on the secondary chain and the V6 mark on the camshaft sprocket. Don't attempt to hold or pry the camshaft target wheel or you might damage it badly and leave your engine unable to start. Unscrew the camshaft sprocket retaining bolt slightly but don't release it, so it's still touching the sprocket when you're done. Make sure to secure the tensioners on the timing chain before you remove the camshaft sprockets, so you won't have to open and close the timing chain cover while resetting them. Guide Special Tool 8379 between the timing chain and the tensioner arm and guide. After that, take out the
Camshaft Position Sensor and prop up the camshaft with Special Tool 8428 while you remove both the bolt and sprocket. Take off the load from the bearings by loosening the retaining bolts one-half turn at a time until all the tension is gone. Be careful not to strike the bearings so they don't bend. Since the
Rocker Arms can drop down when you remove the camshaft, be sure to mark their positions before you go further. Next, take off the bearing covers and the camshaft.
