When replacing a belt on 3.7L and 4.7L engines, make sure the indexing tang on the tensioner doesn't go past the indexing stop on the tensioner's housing by more than 24 mm. If satisfying the specification is not possible, inspect the belt to be sure it has not been misplaced, check wear on the A/C compressor, power steering pump, water pump, idler pulley or generator and look for loose pulleys, misalignment or a poor belt route. A used belt won't provide sufficient driving force, so it should be replaced if the tensioner indexing arrow points at the minimum marker. Eliminate the accessory drive belt before removing the tensioner from its bracket. The automatic tensioner should not be disassembled because high spring pressure makes it a serviced assembly with the exception of the pulley. After that, get rid of the pulley-bolt and detach the pulley from the tensioner.
