2007 Dodge Sprinter 3500 Timing Chain Parts and Q&A
Q: Is Your Timing Chain Showing Signs of Wear and Stretch on 2007 Dodge Sprinter 3500?
A: Remove the right-bank cylinder head cover and position the engine so that the number one cylinder is at TDC. Lock the camshafts with tool 8929 - Locking Pins, aiming the timing marks on the gears to face each other. Do not turn the engine backward, because this can lead to mistakes in the measurements. With both camshafts locked, check where the vibration damper is located; if, at a maximum of 11° from TDC, the belt pulley reaches the marking, the timing chain is considered acceptable, but if it goes farther, you should replace it. Initially, break the negative battery terminal first and then open the cover on the right cylinder head. Line up the mark on the front cover with the mark on the crankshaft damper to get the crankshaft to TDC and make sure the timing marks at the rear of the camshafts are horizontally aligned, facing one another. After that, take out the timing chain tensioner, ensuring you cover the timing chain area to keep it free from debris. Place special tool #9554 in the boat with two cylinder head cover bolts and fasten special tool #9312-1 together using screws for components 9312-3 and 9312-4, attaching insert #9312-13 afterward. Make sure not to place the timing chain plates inside the engine while working. When attaching special tool #9312-1 onto the timing chain link, take off the small nut of the thrust pin #9312-3, so the pin is inside spindle #9312-4 and then firmly seat spindle #9312-4 by hand, positioning it above the rivet between the timing chain links. Turn special tool #9312-12 clockwise, holding the handle, until the rivet removes the chain and you can dispose of the pieces. Use a small screwdriver to stop the timing chain from falling inside the engine, making certain that only one whole timing chain link is taken out. The timing chain should be installed precisely or else serious damage to the engine could occur.
