2007 Jeep Commander Camshaft Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Safely Remove the Right Camshaft Without Causing Damage on 2007 Jeep Commander?
A: Remember to avoid spinning the timing chain away from the camshafts or crankshaft to stop any valve or piston damage. When taking out the cam sprocket, timing chains or camshaft, be sure to use tool 8379 so that you don't overextend the hydraulic tensioner ratchet. At first, take the cylinder head cover off and place the engine at TDC for cylinder No. 1. The camshaft sprocket V6 marks should be aligned with the 12 o'clock indicator at this time. Mark one position on the secondary timing chain on all four sides of the V6 mark on the camshaft sprocket before installation. Make sure you don't try to twist or turn the camshaft target wheel so you don't damage anything and risk not being able to start the vehicle. Loose the bolt that secures the camshaft sprocket, but not to the point that it moves away from the sprocket. Leave the camshaft tensioners locked before removing the sprockets since expanding tensioners will require you to remove the timing chain cover for correction. Place tool 8379 in the guide and tap it to press the chain up against the tensioner arm. Take out the camshaft position sensor and clamp the camshaft using special tool 8428 before you remove the bolt and sprocket. Gradually slacken each of the camshaft bearing cap retaining bolts by a half turn to release the load so the bearing caps do not receive any blow or impact. Because the rocker arms might drop off the valves when the camshaft is taken out, be sure to mark them first before you remove the camshaft bearing caps and camshaft.
