2007 Jeep Compass Shock Absorber Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Disassemble a Shock Absorber in a Suspension Strut Assembly on 2007 Jeep Compass?
A: Remove the assembly from the car, then compress the coil spring using either a strut spring compressor, teamPSE tool 223-7400 or a similar one as directed by the manufacturer. Make sure the coil spring is properly squeezed before you try to loosen the strut rod nut. If you replace them both, mark the coil spring and strut assembly for their left and right sides. Set the strut component onto the compressor, clamp the lower and upper hooks to the coil spring and push to remove all tension. Do not operate high-speed or impact tools on your lawnmower to keep the internal bearings safe. Following compression, use Strut Nut Wrench 9362 on the nut and Strut Shaft Socket 9894 on the rod's end and then hold the rod as you remove the nut. Take away any clamp from the coil spring's base and then withdraw the strut (damper), the dust shield and jounce bumper with it, all the way through the coil spring. Lift the lower spring isolator 7 away from the strut seat, raise off the dust shield and jounce bumper 6 from the strut rod and remove the upper mount 2 and bearing 3 from the upper spring seat and isolator 4. On coil spring 5, back off the compressor drive to remove the tension, then pull out the coil spring. Examine all elements of the strut assembly: shaft binding in strut (damper) 8, cracks in jounce bumper (with dust shield) 6, deformation in upper mount 2, binding in bearings 3, cracking in upper spring seat and isolator 4, damage in both upper and lower spring isolators 4 and 7 and faults in the coil spring 5. Any damaged parts should be replaced.
