2008 Chrysler Pacifica Rack And Pinion Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Install a Rack and Pinion Steering System on 2008 Chrysler Pacifica?
A: If required, start by putting outer tie rods onto the inner tie rod threads with the same number of rotations you used when you took them off to get the correct toe alignment. Place the rack and pinion under the left wheel, being sure not to damage the tie rod boots during installation. The bolt for the driver's side of the rack and pinion is longer; center the mounting bosses over the holes in the cradle and attach the two bolts, tightening them to 163 Nm (120 ft. lbs.). When using 4.0L engines, add the stabilizer bar cushion retainer with heat shield and fix it with bolts tightened to 54 Nm (40 ft. lbs.). Next, put the screws in front of the rack and pinion and secure them with 4 Nm (35 in. lbs.). It's important to clean the rack and pinion connections and replace the O-rings with fresh ones before you connect the hoses and grease them with clean fluid. To avoid problems with routing, place the hose tubes just 18 mm apart when the engine is 3.8L. After wiring the rack and pinion harness, you should fit the pressure hose into the gear port and tighten the tube nut to 31 Nm (23 ft. lbs.) and afterward attach the return hose the same way. Put the rack and pinion shaft in the middle of its travel and make sure the splines on the rack and pinion shaft meet those on the shaft extension, then fit the extension onto the rack and pinion shaft. Connect the roll pin to the intermediate shaft extension and rack and pinion shaft using Special Tool 6831A, then make sure it is in the center before removing the tool. Cover the shaft with its cover and then hook the outer tie rod to the knuckle at each side of the car, applying a new nut to the outer tie rod stud and tightening it to 47 Nm (35 ft. lbs.) plus another 1/2 turn. Insert the tie rod jam nuts on each side so they are not fully tightened, since they will need a final adjustment during wheel alignment. Attach the wheel and tire assembly to each side, ensuring that the wheel nuts are tightened to 135 Nm (100 ft. lbs.) and after you've lowered the vehicle, attach the negative battery cable. Take out the steering wheel holder, finish filling and bleeding the rack and pinion system, search for any leaks and align and adjust the wheels according to the specifications.
