2008 Chrysler PT Cruiser Piston Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Remove and Replace a Piston and Connecting Rod on 2008 Chrysler PT Cruiser?
A: You should remove the cylinder head first, then move on to taking out the oil pan and the Balance Shaft Carrier Assembly before you remove or replace the piston and connecting rod. Before removing the pistons, go over the cyliner bores with a ridge reamer to make sure the ridge at the top is removed, so the pistons are entirely covered. Make sure you notice that pistons have a directional marking facing the front half of the engine. To remove pistons and connecting rods from the cylinder block, hold the engine in the TDC position with the pistons centered in their bores. Write the cylinder number on the cap of each connecting rod with a permanent marker; avoid stamps or punches to keep from causing harm to the rod. Carefully take out the connecting rod bolts and cap, so that the surfaces of the rod and cap aren't damaged and don't ever reuse the connecting rod bolts. When taking out the piston/connecting rod on a Turbocharger equipped engine, be carefu To keep the crankshaft journal and broken connecting rod rod surfaces safe, set up Connecting Rod Guides 8189, then push each piston and rod out of the cylinder bore carefully. Following removal, detach the Connecting Rod Guides 8189, put the bearing cap from the mating rod back on and redo this step for every connecting rod and piston assembly. After that, remove the piston rings.
