2007 Chrysler PT Cruiser Piston Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Assemble Piston and Connecting Rod Components on 2007 Chrysler PT Cruiser?
A: Before installing the piston and connecting rod, install the piston rings on the piston so the compression ring gaps and the oil ring rail gap are not aligned. Before putting the ring compressor to use, see that the oil ring expander ends meet and the rail gaps have been placed properly. Place the piston and its rings in clean engine oil and, as you slide the ring compressor onto the piston, be sure not to disrupt the arrangement of the rings. When using the piston/rod assembly again, place it back in its original position and be sure the stamp is in front of the engine. Turn the crankshaft to place the connecting rod journal in the middle of the cylinder bore and rub clean engine oil around it. Insert the connecting rod's upper bearing half and add Connecting Rod Guides 8189 onto the connecting rod. Press the piston down into the bore with a hammer handle as you slide the connecting rod onto the journal and then remove the Connecting Rod Guides 8189. You should never reuse the connecting rod cap bolts; instead, apply clean engine oil to the threads of new bolts. Secure the half that sits below into the cap on the connecting rod and then fix the cap and each bolt by turning them just sufficiently tight, before torquing them all to 27 Nm (20 ft. lbs.) and doing one quarter of an extra turn by hand. Measure the space between the connecting rod and the engine block and make sure it fits, then set in the Balance Shaft Carrier Assembly, oil pan (3) and cylinder head. After that, start the car and make sure there are no leaks.
