2009 Chrysler PT Cruiser Piston Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Assemble Piston and Connecting Rod Components on 2009 Chrysler PT Cruiser?
A: First put the piston rings on the piston and be sure the compression rings are not aligned with the gap on the oil rings' rail. Make sure the ends of the oil ring expander are aligned and that the rail gaps are exactly as they should be before using the ring compressor. Coat the piston head and its rings with clean engine oil, then put the ring compressor over the piston, making sure the rings don't shift. If you use a piston/rod assembly again, make certain that the 'up' or 'directional' stamp is on the piston looking forward as the engine sits in front of you. Turn the crankshaft until the center of the connecting rod journal is in the bore, then coat it with clean oil. Put the connecting rod upper bearing half inside the connecting rod and secure Connecting Rod Guides 8189 on it. Push the piston down into the cylinder bore with a hammer handle and slide the connecting rod onto the connecting rod journal. After that, take out the Connecting Rod Guides 8189. It is not safe to reuse the cap bolts from the connecting rod; always apply clean engine oil to the threads of new bolts. After putting in the lower part of the bearing, cap the rod and adjust each bolt to be finger tight. In the second part, setting each bolt 27 Nm (20 ft. lbs.) and turning another 1/4 without a torque wrench. Check the width of space between the connecting rod and the crankcase with a feeler gauge. Place the Balance Shaft Carrier Assembly next and smoothly hook in the oil pan. Finally, set the cylinder head on top of the engine block. Turn on the engine as the last step and watch for any drips.
