2008 Dodge Ram 1500 Battery Cable Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Maintain and Repair Battery Cables on Gasoline and Diesel Engines on 2008 Dodge Ram 1500?
A: Before servicing or repairing the battery cables, make sure the ignition switch is positioned to Off and all electrical accessories are off. When removing the negative cable, detach the battery negative terminal clamp (3), then come out the bolt securing the cable to the left front fender, then remove the bolt securing it to the engine and the bolt securing it to the left frame rail. Remove and put aside the battery cable retaining pushpins, fasteners and routing clips until you can disconnect the whole cable. For the positive cable on gasoline engines, take off the battery's positive and negative cable clamps (1) and (3), unfasten the nut (9) that connects the cable to the Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM) (5) and lastly pull the two TIPM cable connectors (6) and (7) apart. Remove the battery tray pushpin (8) from the battery, raise the vehicle and take out the two pushpins holding the battery cable against the left frame rail. Unscrew the nut (5) attaching the cable to the solenoid (6), lower the vehicle, lift off the terminal cap (4) and remove the nut (3) that secures the cable (1) to the alternator (2). Afterwards, take off any pushpins left on the car and remove the red positive cable from the battery. Similar steps are used for left and right negative power cables in diesel engines; begin by turning the ignition switch off, unclamp the negative cables (clamp no. 1 and 9), remove the bolts and follow the retaining pushpins until the cable comes free. Turn the ignition off, tighten the clamps at the negative terminals and release the bolts at each positive cable connection. After that, trace the retaining pins and screws and remove them until the cables are loose.
