2008 Dodge Sprinter 2500 Rod Bearing Parts and Q&A
Q: How Can Rod Bearings Be Marked and Installed for Accurate Assembly on 2008 Dodge Sprinter 2500?
A: When removing bearing caps, mark them so assembly is done correctly since they are not meant to be switched. Before fitting the shells, the tangs on both rods and caps should be in the matching grooves, so the same side of the cap's tang faces the rod. Continue fitting all your rods on the same bank until all are secured, keeping an eye on the limits for out-of-round and taper in the journals which should not exceed 0.005 mm (0.0001 in.) for each crankshaft. Range engineering bears are standard, along with two smaller sizes and should be installed together. Using old bearings with new ones and filing down the rods or bearing caps is also not permitted. Plastigage is the preferred tool for measuring main bearing clearance and connecting rod clearance. The rod bearing bolts have to be investigated before use; they must be exchanged if the threads have become narrower. If the threads of the connecting rod bolts don't all touch the measuring tool or edge, it means they've stretched and you should replace them all. Before installing, make sure all threads are clean and size the bolts with a clean cloth to mark which goes where and then alternate between tightening the bolts to properly assemble the cap. For checking connecting rod side clearance, secure a dial indicator to a place where the engine won't move, placing the probe coplanar with the connecting rod cap. Take the link to the end of its movement, set the dial to zero and read the dial's measurement by moving the rod forward to its limit. Do the same with each connecting rod after rotating the crankshaft to make them easier to work on.
