While putting in the bearing shells, the tangs in the caps should be set into the matching grooves in the rods, keeping the side that matches the rod. Be sure that each bank has all its rods mounted before moving on and make sure the limits of taper or out-of-round on any crankshaft journals stay below 0.005 mm (0.0001 in.). Bearing halves come in three sizes, standard, 0.025 mm (0.001 in.) and 0.254 mm (0.010 in.) undersize and should be installed as a pair; mixing one new and one used is not allowed and neither the rods nor bearing caps should be filed. You should use plastigage for determining the clearance of both main bearings and connecting rod bearings. If, when using a scale or straight edge, all threads do not come in contact with it, this means the bolt should be altered. Check the threads and clean them before attaching the bolts which you should tighten alternately by hand to ensure the cap goes together correctly, then tighten all the bolts to the right torque. To measure the connecting rod side clearance, secure a dial indicator to a fixed spot on the engine and make sure the probe is perpendicular to the cap under inspection. Take the connecting rod to its furthest point to the rear, zero the dial indicator and then move it all the way forward and check the dial reading against the standard. Do this process for each connecting rod, rotating the crankshaft to reach them.
