2008 Dodge Sprinter 2500 Timing Chain Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Set the Timing Chain After Complete Removal from the Engine on 2008 Dodge Sprinter 2500?
A: After taking out the entire timing chain, make sure to add the drift into the camshaft adjuster, in preparation for setting the timing. Fit (5) into the hole at (6) on the end of the intake camshaft, so that the markings on the camshaft adjuster are straight and the adjuster doesn't move. Place the intake and exhaust camshafts into the cylinder head so the horizontal mark is aligned with the top edge (4) and the vertical mark is aimed upward (3). Put the slot on the balance shaft in line with the mark on the cylinder head found at about 2 o'clock and check for and replace worn timing chain guides. Install all the timing chain guides (1) and the timing chain guide pins. Insert the timing chain starting at the side of the left cylinder head, carry it around and through the engine and balance shaft and have it pass by the right cylinder head intake camshaft, move over the right head and descend into the crankshaft sprocket. Work the timing chain up through the left cylinder head and connect it with a fresh timing chain link. Take out the left camshaft adjuster's drift, add a proper camshaft timing wheel to the left cylinder's intake camshaft and adjust it until the wheel is flush with the camshaft and their holes line up. Screw the left camshaft adjuster center bolt in by hand, remove the drift from the right cylinder head bolts and repeat for the right side. After the left cylinder cover, install the left upper front cover, proceed with the right cylinder head cover and complete the installation by installing the right upper front cover. With proper camshaft alignment, stamps on the timing wheels will show through the camshaft position sensor holes. Set the front cover, timing chain tensioner, crankshaft damper (3) and crankshaft damper bolt (4) into place, pull out the crankshaft locking tool and finally install the accessory drive belt.
