2008 Dodge Sprinter 3500 Crankshaft Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Install Crankshaft and Its Components in an Engine on 2008 Dodge Sprinter 3500?
A: The crankshaft is installed after cleaning away oil and cleaning all the connecting surfaces. If there is any damage to a bearing, first clear the connecting rod bores, the crank shaft and all oil galleries of any particles and after that remove the steel ball located in the main oil gallery before you begin cleaning. Checked the crankshaft and bearings and changed them when needed. Place the crankshaft bearings and the upper thrust bearing part and locate the crankshaft as you install the main bearing caps. Then, put the lower section of the crankshaft thrust bearing into position and check and replace the main bearing cap bolts that are not within the right specifications. Adjust the main bearing caps to 44 Nm (33 lb. ft.) in the correct sequence. Check that the crankshaft rotates easily; if not, remove the bearing caps, adjust them and re-tighten them. Whenever any rod cap bolts loosen or bearing caps are unbolted, replace all connecting rods. Avoid causing marks or stops on the crankshaft while fitting the connecting rod so that it does not distort or dent the oil jet which could seriously harm the engine. After the pistons and connecting rods are installed, put the rear crankshaft oil seal onto the crankshaft and add the oil pump. Fit the oil pump chain, set the timing chairs onto the crankshaft and install the windage tray. Place the cylinder heads on their ends and install the timing chain sprockets onto the camshafts before you set the engine timing. After the camshaft covers go on the heads, put on the upper oil pan and the lower oil pan as well, provided you have one. Secure the intake manifold, vacuum pump, engine harness, air flow control valve assembly, water pump and oil filter assembly. After installing the side exhaust manifolds and turbocharger, bolt on the fuel rails and their lines and after that, attach the flex plate. Afterward, install the engine in the car, add just enough oil, start the engine and look for signs of leaks.
