2008 Dodge Sprinter 3500 Piston Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Remove and Replace a Piston on 2008 Dodge Sprinter 3500?
A: Connecting and disconnecting the battery cables should only be done when the cylinder head is removed. Lift the vehicle on a hoist and get rid of the oil pan, then remove the oil pump pickup tube. Prior to taking the pistons out, use the ridge reamer to get rid of the top ridge of the cylinder bores, to make sure the tops are properly covered. The pistons and connecting rods are removed from the top of the engine, turning the crankshaft as you center each connecting rod into the engine's cylinder. Avoid damaging the crankshaft's journals as you rotate it. After you take out the bearing cap, place it on the matching rod and mark the pistons with the numbers of their cylinders. To take out the piston pin, hold the connecting rods in a soft jawed vice, take away the two snap rings on the piston pin and push it out of position. Wait till you see the ID mark pointing at the center of the piston, then use a proper ring expander to remove the top and second piston rings as well as the side rails and oil expander from the piston. Make sure to clean any carbon from the tops, sides and grooves of each piston and be certain the oil control ring grooves have clean oil holes.
