2009 Chrysler Sebring Tie Rod End Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Properly Install a Tie Rod End with a Travel Restrictor and Bellows on the Steering Gear on 2009 Chrysler Sebring?
A: Use a travel restrictor that matches the previous one in color and size in order to set the steering gear travel correctly, because thickness can be different on different parts. Start by having the flat side of the teeth face out on the inboard side when you install the travel restrictor onto the inner tie rod ball joint. After cleaning the threads, put some Mopar(R) Lock & Seal Adhesive or an equivalent product onto the inboard end threads of the inner tie rod. Right now, hold the crows foot wrench on the inner tie rod end and screw the inner tie rod onto the gear inside the housing, tightening it to 78 Nm (58 ft. lbs.) with the help of a inner tie rod tool. Use the NEW clamp to attach the large end of the NEW bellows loosely and move the bellows with the clamp over the inner tie rod end and onto the gear body. Slide the small part of the bellows into the groove formed in the inner tie rod. Squeeze a small smear of Mopar(R) Lubriplate or its equivalent into the groove on the inner tie rod shaft to allow you to adjust toe adjustment without turning the bellows. Press the small end of the bellows out, so the ridge fits inside the groove and clamp this spot with a NEW clamp. Crimp the large clamp with crimping pliers to make sure the bellows stay attached to the gear body. When working on the inner tie rod, first cover the steering gear with the heat shield, screw in the mounting screws and push in the push-pins and finally tighten the screws to 6 Nm (53 in. lbs.). Slip the tie rod jam nut onto the inner tie rod to fit the outer tie rod and continue with adding the outer tie rod.
