2009 Dodge Charger Sway Bar Kit Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Install a Sway Bar Kit in the Rear Suspension for Rear on 2009 Dodge Charger?
A: Start with isolators on the sway bar kit so the slits are facing the front and the flat side is against the crossmember. After that, fit the attachments to the isolators and install the sway bar kit, plus isolators and retainers, onto the crossmember. Secure the isolator retainer mounting bolts in place and then put in the bolts and nuts joining the sway bar kit ends with the stabilizer links, but don't tighten either. Close the isolator retainer mounting bolts to a force of 61 Nm (45 ft. lbs.). Take the coil springs off each spring link, raise the crossmember to its mounting points, slide the propeller shaft onto the rear axle differential and position the shocks into the matching sockets in the spring links. The rear bolts are longer and must not be put on the front of the shock absorber. Lift the crossmember until the left mounting bolts can easily be inserted, then lock them into place but do not tighten yet. Use care to lower the jack enough to drop one edge of the crossmember, but still leave the coil spring hardware in place. After putting the coil spring into the spring pocket, center it with the body mount. When the jack is raised, place the coil spring and shock absorber lower end into position until their lower mounting holes are lined up. Temporarily put the lower mounting bolt and nut on the frame, but don't tighten them. Before lifting the crossmember in an AWD ride, place spacers on top of the right mount bushings. Set the right handlebar crossmember in place and put in the bolts on the right, tightening them down but not all the way yet. Unscrew the bolts connecting the left front and rear crossmember to the body, drop the car with the jack and allow the left front and rear crossmember to settle until the isolators are all the way in near the time of coil spring assembly. Proceed with coil spring replacement on the left side, aligning the spring and absorber and setting in the lower fastener bolt and nut without tightening. Put the spacers atop the bushings on the left crossmember mounts before lifting the crossmember into place on an AWD vehicle. Pick up the left side of the crossmember and rest it in place, then tighten its left side mounting bolts until they are snug, without securing them completely. Relocate the crossmember until the tension link and weld flange are the same distance apart as the body, making sure it does not exceed 12 mm for good movement. If the measurement is less than 12 mm, move the rear crossmember backward until the distance is right, secure the looser bolts and take another measurement. Screw all four crossmember mounting bolts to 180 Nm (133 ft. lbs.), lower the jack from the rear axle differential and loosen the bungee cord from the propeller shaft. Manually rotate the shaft until its alignment notches fit and set and tighten the bolts and nuts between the coupler and rear propeller axle to 81 Nm (60 ft. lbs.), using torque tools only. Connect the fuel filler tube, link the left rear wheel sensor cable to the routing clip by the body connector and securely attach the left rear wheel sensor to the right assembly's connector. After removing the body wiring harness cover, place the speed sensor connectors into the wiring harness connector in the luggage compartment floor pan and push the retaining clip into place. Whenever you insert caliper guide pin bolts, tidy the threads and put Mopar(R) Lock & Seal Adhesive or an alternative before insertion. To do this for single or dual disc calipers, push the caliper guide pins in the caliper adapter, drop the caliper through the rear suspension and bring it over the brake pads until it lines up with the guide pins, then tighten the bolts until you hit 31 Nm (23 ft. lbs.). Routing the brake hose in the prescribed way is very important. Jack up the spring link on SRT8 disc brakes, pull the caliper with the pads over the rotor and fit the caliper into place with the bolts, hand-tightening the bolts to 96 ft. lbs. Take out the jack from the spring link, stick the locating pin for the parking brake cable into the front of the crossmember and fit the screw to secure the parking brake cable bracket against the rear crossmember. Move the parking brake cable up over the rear crossmember and fit it through the equalizer above the rear axle differential. Connect the parking brakes from the front of the car to the rear that is on the right. Next, put in the rear exhaust system, then the tire and wheel sets which should be tightened to either 150 Nm (110 ft. lbs.) or 190 Nm (140 ft. lbs.) on police cars. Make the rear wheels almost touch the floor, hold down the parking brake, let it go and apply it once more to stop any rear wheel rotation. Move the car over the pit and attach the negative battery cable to the designated battery post. Make sure your brake pedal is stable by pumping it several times before you move. Raise the car on an alignment rack or drive-on hoist, find the mounting bolts and tighten the lower mount nuts of the shock absorbers to 72 Nm (53 ft. lbs.) and the sway bar kit fixings to 61 Nm (45 ft. lbs.). After that, make sure to perform wheel alignment and especially focus on the thrust angle and if you find the rear crossmember needs to be moved to correct it, keep in mind not to let the tension link get too close.
