2009 Dodge Dakota Belt Tensioner Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Belt Tensioner on 3.7L/4.7L Engines on 2009 Dodge Dakota?
A: Service work on the accessory drive belt tensioner on 3.7L/4.7L engines begins by checking that the indexing tang on the back of the tensioner is positioned within about 24 mm (.94 inches) of the indexing stop, only if a new belt is being fitted (considered so when it has only been running for no more than 15 minutes). In case you do not meet the recommendations, look for a replacement belt in use instead of the proper one, worn bearings on any engine accessories such as the A/C compressor, power steering pump, water pump, idler pulley or generator, a loose pulley on an engine accessory, a misaligned engine accessory or inappropriate routing of the belt. You should replace a used belt if the indexing arrow for the tensioner points to its lowest tension level. To start, unfasten the accessory drive belt and afterward take out the tensioner assembly from its bracket. Since the pressure in the spring is high, it is not recommended to disassemble the automatic tensioner, as it is serviced as a whole assembly except for the tensioner pulley. In the end, remove the pulley bolt and get rid of the pulley on the tensioner.
