2009 Dodge Dakota Timing Chain Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Remove and Replace a Timing Chain and Sprockets on 2009 Dodge Dakota?
A: The first thing to do is disconnect the battery's negative cable and drain the cooling system before removing and replacing the timing chain and sprockets. After that, take out the covers for the right and left cylinder heads, then remove the radiator fan. Adjust the engine until the crankshaft timing mark matches the timing chain cover's zero mark and the V6 marks on the camshaft are at the top for No. 1 exhaust stroke. Get to the chain guide fasteners by unattaching the power steering pump and pulling access plugs from the left and right cylinder heads. First, take off the oil fill housing to reach the fastener of the tensioner arm on the right. After that, get rid of the crankshaft damper and timing chain cover. Fold over and secure the first chain tensioner with a pin and then use your hand to close the oil pan opening to ensure the plate behind the left secondary chain tensioner stays in place. Then, remove the two secondary chain tensioners and the camshaft position sensor without harming the camshaft target wheel. It's important not to turn the camshafts or crankshafts apart from each other to prevent any damage. After removing the bolts from the left and right camshaft sprockets, use Camshaft Holder 8428A to hold the left camshaft's steel tube while taking out the left camshaft sprocket. Rotate the left camshaft a little clockwise to a neutral position before remove the sprocket. Repeat it one more time with the right camshaft sprocket. After taking out the idler sprocket assembly bolt, push both the idler sprocket assembly and crank sprocket forward to take out the primary and secondary chains. Once everything has been removed from the motor, also take out the two tensioner arms and the chain guides and end with the primary chain tensioner.
