2009 Dodge Ram 1500 Rack And Pinion Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Properly Install a Rack and Pinion Steering System on 2009 Dodge Ram 1500?
A: Inspect the bushings on the rack and pinion before installing to be sure you replace any worn or damaged pieces. The frame features two mounting holes; the rack and pinion slots into the slotted hole, but through the round hole it is bolted in place first. Set up the rack and pinion on the front crossmember and bolt them in place with 319 Nm (235 ft. lbs.) torque. Slide the coupler over the piece of equipment and install a fresh pinch bolt, tightening it to 49 Nm (36 ft. lbs.). Refresh and torque the screws at 61 Nm (45 ft. lbs.), but turn them an additional 90 degrees. The pressure power steering hose must be joined to the rack and pinion and then tightened with 32 Nm (23 ft. lbs.), while the return power steering hose should be tightened to 50 Nm (37 ft. lbs.). Equipped front skid plate needs to be installed before the front tires and wheels are fitted. Bring the vehicle down on the ground, then load the power steering with some fluid and set the angle of the wheels.
