2009 Jeep Commander Timing Chain Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Remove and Replace a Timing Chain and Sprockets on 2009 Jeep Commander?
A: Before removing and changing the timing chain and sprockets, first unplug the negative cable from the battery and drain the cooling system. After that, open the covers on the cylinder heads and then remove the radiator fan. Rotate the engine to get the timing mark of the crankshaft damper in sync with the TDC mark on the timing chain cover, so the "V6" on the camshaft sprocket points to 12 o'clock for No. 1 exhaust stroke. Remove the power steering pump and take out the access plugs on both left and right cylinder heads to come to the chain guide fasteners. Remove the oil fill housing to expose the fastener on the right side tensioner arm and then tackle the crankshaft damper and timing chain cover. Pin the primary chain tensioner in place and cover the oil pan entrance to stop anything from falling behind the left secondary chain tensioner. Remove the secondary chain tensioners and the camshaft position sensor, being careful not to touch or rotate any switched camshaft or crankshaft until you are able to properly secure the engine. Separate the left and right camshaft sprocket bolts, then set the Camshaft Holder 8428A under the left camshaft steel tube to hold it and stick the left camshaft sprocket loose while turning the camshaft counter-clockwise about 5 degrees. Do the same thing for the right camshaft sprocket as well. Pull the bolt holding the idler sprocket assembly, then remove the sprockets and chains by slipping the idler and crank sprocket assembly together forward. The last step is removing the two pivoting tensioner arms, both chain guides, before proceeding to the main tensioner.
