2009 Jeep Compass Air Bag Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Safely Remove and Replace a Seat Air Bag on 2009 Jeep Compass?
A: Start by disconnecting the SRS which means disconnecting the negative battery cable and then waiting a full two minutes for the capacitor to empty the system's charge. Use rubber gloves, protect your eyes and wear a shirt that covers your arms to prevent irritation from the air bag parts. Push the front seat forward to get to the mounting hardware easily, then take the front seat out of the car. Take care not to tear or damage the seat air bag pouch while removing the seat back trim cover, since this leads to the front seat back cover being replaced. Take off the trim at both ends of the front seat back frame, but stay on the outside until after removing the air bag. Disconnect the seat wire harness connector from the seat air bag inflator by pressing the yellow locking tab down and pulling the insulator by squeezing its tabs. Unscrew the nuts holding the seat air bag to the side of the seat frame and pull the outside part of the seat back trim cover over the top of the seat frame to give you access to the air bag. Keep working at the join between the seat back cover and frame, carefully lifting the seat air bag studs and sliding out the air bag, all without damaging either the cover or the pouch.
