2009 Jeep Compass Steering Knuckle Parts and Q&A
Q: How is the Steering Knuckle Installed on the Front on 2009 Jeep Compass?
A: Slide the hub on the front steering knuckle onto the halfshaft outer C/V joint. Slide the knuckle up the ball joint stud so the bolt hole on the knuckle matches the groove on the stud. Replace the old ball joint stud with a new pinch bolt and nut-tighten the nut to 82 Nm (60 ft. lbs.). Serrated bolts hold the strut assembly to the knuckle, so ensure they don't move while installing the nuts. Place the lower part of the strut assembly where it lines up perfectly with the knuckle's upper end, making sure the holes align and add the mounting bolts. Screw the nuts onto the bolts and tighten them up to 110 Nm (81 ft. lbs.), as you hold the bolts in place. Slide the outer tie rod ball stud into the knuckle arm, put the nut for the tie rod onto the stud and tighten it to 132 Nm (97 ft. lbs.) while holding onto the stud with a wrench. Place the wheel speed sensor head into the knuckle and tighten its screw to 12 Nm (106 in. lbs.). Then connect the routing clip for the cable. Put in the new brake rotor, disc brake caliper and adapter. Brush the threads on the halfshaft stub shaft and then place on the washer and nut onto the shaft's end. As someone is applying the brakes to keep the hub from rotating, tighten the hub nut to 244 Nm (180 ft. lbs.) by hand. Place the spring washer and hub nut lock over the hub nut and stub shaft, fasten the nut lock with a new cotter pin wrapped tightly. Put the tire and wheel into place, tighten the wheel mounting nuts to 135 Nm (100 ft. lbs.) and bring the vehicle down to the ground after that. Since Net-Build design is used, often you won't need to readjust wheel alignment if installing the same knuckle.
