2010 Chrysler PT Cruiser Automatic Transmission Filter Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Maintain and Replace an Automatic Transmission Filter in the 40TE Automatic Transaxle on 2010 Chrysler PT Cruiser?
A: To handle maintenance and repair of the 40TE Automatic Transaxle, open the maintenance section to discover the scheduled replacement intervals for the fluid and filter. At the time of transmission oil change, use Mopar® ATF+4 and remember to clean the oil pan magnet using a clean, dry cloth. Should the transaxle be taken apart, be sure to change the fluid and filter at that point. At first, use a hoist to lift the car and place a drain container under the transaxle oil pan. Loosen the pan bolts, give a little tap on the pan to break it from the engine and take out the oil pan to let the fluid drain. Fit a new filter and O-ring onto the valve body from the bottom, wash the oil pan and magnet, apply fresh Mopar Silicone Adhesive sealant to the valve and tighten the bolts to 19 Nm (165 in. lbs.). Pour four quarts of Mopar® ATF+4 into the dipstick opening, turn on the engine and let it idle for a minute at least. With both brakes applied, press the gear lever briefly into each position and stop it in the Park or Neutral spot. Fill the transaxle with fluid until it's 3 mm (1/8 in.) below the lowest line on the dipstick and then check the level once the transaxle has reached its working temperature of 82°C (180°F). Don't forget to make sure the dipstick is all the way in to prevent pollutants from damaging the transaxle. With the dipstick tube fluid suction, have the transaxle at full operating temperature, pick a fitting suction device, insert the suction line into the dipstick tube and confirm it touches the oil pan's lowest point for complete removal. With the suction line removed, add four quarts of Mopar® ATF+4 through the dipstick opening, start up the engine and use the same dipstick method to check the fluid, fully inserting it afterward.
