2010 Chrysler PT Cruiser Steering Knuckle Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Disassemble a Steering Knuckle on 2010 Chrysler PT Cruiser?
A: Before disassembling the steering knuckle, take out the wheel bearing and hub from the car. Start by pressing down Press (1) and Special Tool C-4150A to separate one of the three studs from the hub flange and repeat the action for all the studs. Switch the hub clockwise to place the loose stud(s) in the bearing retainer plate notch (2) and pull the stud out through the open notch. Hold the hub so it fits in place with the bearing guide holes facing downward, so the bearing splitter can fit in place behind the flange. Place the Bearing Splitter (2) on top of Special Tool 1130, between the hub and the bearing retainer plate and tighten the nuts by hand. With the arbor press supporting it, set the steering knuckle face down on the bearing splitter and saw, keeping the press support blocks clear of the wheel hub. Place Special Tool 6644-2 (2) into Remover/Installer (1) and, with the arbor press ram lowered, take out the hub from the wheel bearing and knuckle. There will usually be the bearing race inside the hub when it is removed. When the bearing splitter is removed, undo the three bolts on the belt retainer plate (3) that attaches to the knuckle and take out the plate. Put the knuckle with its face flat in the arbor press and avoid putting anything that will block the bearing. Place Remover/Installer (2) and Special Tool MB-990799 on the outer race of the wheel bearing, then use the arbor press to embed the tool and remove the bearing from the knuckle. Should the bearing race be secured on the hub, slip the Bearing Splitter (3) inside, where it falls between the hub flange and the bearing race (5), using Special Tool 1130. Seat the bearing race, hub and bearing splitter on the arbor press, checking that nothing prevents the wheel hub from turning; then apply Remover/Installer (6) and Special Tool 6644-2 at the end of the hub to remove it.
