2009 Chrysler PT Cruiser Steering Knuckle Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Remove a Front Steering Knuckle on 2009 Chrysler PT Cruiser?
A: Lift the car up with a jack, then with the wheels off, take out the securing nuts on the tire and wheel assembly. After that, remove both the cotter pin, lock nut and spring washer from the hub nut. When the helper holds the brakes on to prevent the hub from moving, take off the nut and washer from the half shaft of the axle. Take out and remove the front brake rotor. Pull the screw from the wheel speed sensor and remove the sensor head with heat shield from inside the knuckle. Pull out the nut from the outer tie rod and use a wrench to secure the rod's stud as you do this. Use your Remover MB991113 to remove the tie rod end from the knuckle and next, take out the outer tie rod and heat shield. Get rid of the nut and the pinch bolt attaching the stud to the adjacent knuckle and do not rotate the bolts that join the strut to the knuckle. Hold the bolt heads in place and undo the nuts on the bolts holding the strut to the knuckle. Then remove both bolts with the pin punch. Remove the ball joint stud from the knuckle with the right tool, being careful not to damage the ball joint seal. Back up the halfshaft to limit the inner C/V joint from breaking, then remove the knuckle from the same side of the joint splines and detach it from the car. If no wheel bearing is included with the replacement steering knuckle, you should install a new one into the knuckle since front wheel bearings of this type do not transfer. If the removal of the wheel bearing and hub is necessary, do not reuse the wheel bearing.
