The Chrysler 300 Tie Rod is the primary steering component that connects the steering gear to the steering knuckles. It turns the front wheels based on your steering wheel action. The Tie Rod assembly is made up of an inner Tie Rod and an outer Tie Rod that are interconnected by an adjustable sleeve. This sleeve is responsible for setting the wheel alignment. The inner end is threaded to the rack in rack and pinion layouts. Meanwhile, the outer end is secured to the steering arm through a tapered ball stud and nut. The ball stud pivots within a lubricated socket and is covered with a rubber boot. This allows the linkage to move side to side for steering but also up and down for the suspension. On the Chrysler 300, this part operates with small ball joints, providing smooth operation and limiting shock transfer from the road. Many Chrysler 300 models have factory-sealed wheel lugs, eliminating the need for routine greasing. In order to keep the steering system of their Chrysler 300 tight, the Tie Rod must be replaced on the detection of looseness, torn boots, or other wear-related defects.

Chrysler 300 Tie Rod Parts and Q&A

  • Q:
How to Maintain the Tie Rod on Chrysler 300?
    A:
To service the outer tie rod of all-wheel-drive vehicles, take care that the bellows is not twisted when rotating the inner tie rod. Prior to proceeding, remove clamp 2 at inner tie rod, and check bellows movement is free. Screw outer tie rod 4 onto inner tie rod 3 the same number of turns as it was unscrewed. Subsequently, the nut 1 must be tightened to a torque of 85 Nm (63 ft. lbs.) on outer tie rod end 2. The next step is to install the tire and wheel assemblies and tighten the wheel mounting nuts to a torque between 3 and 150 Nm (110 ft. lbs.) or 190 Nm (140 ft. lbs.) for police models. The vehicle should be lowered, wheel alignment performed and the toe set to specification. Last, tighten tie rod jam nut 1 to 75 Nm (55 ft. lbs.).
  • Q:
How to Service and Repair an Inner Tie Rod on Chrysler 300?
    A:
To service and repair the inner tie rod, the outer tie rod must first be removed and then the tie rod jam nut from the inner tie rod must be removed. In vehicles equipped with AWD, you might need to remove the heat shield above the inner tie rod bellows for better access to the bellows clamp. Then, detach the clamp holding the bellows to the inner tie rod and the clamp securing the bellows to the steering gear body before removing the bellows themselves. Utilize the proper tool for removal of the inner tie rod attachment on the hex. If the inner tie rod is unable to be removed with the tools specified, do not use a hammer or heat to loosen it up as this will damage the steering gear. This will make a new steering gear necessary. At last, unthread and remove the inner tie rod, before taking out the travel restrictor from the rack gear.
