A suitable drain pan should first be put under the converter housing portion of the transmission and then both the transmission and the torque converter should be removed from the vehicle before service. It's necessary to check that the transmission is secure on either the lift or work surface, as removing the torque converter will make the unit top-heavy which causes it to be unstable. Put the torque converter back till the seal on the oil pump is cleared, then take it off the transmission. Before beginning the installation, inspect the converter hub and drive notches for sharp edges, burrs, scratches or nicks and smooth them using 320/400 grit paper or crocus cloth if needed, to prevent damaging the pump seal. Slide the torque converter onto the transmission. Before inserting it, coat the seal lip of the oil pump with transmission fluid. Guide the converter into the opening of the oil pump seal, slide the hub into the pump and rotate the converter as you push it completely into the pump gears. Test the fit of the converter by placing it on a scale and moving a straightedge behind the equating face until its surface is just 1/2 inch behind. If needed, attach a C-clamp to the converter housing while testing and lastly refill the transmission with the standard fluid before putting it all back into the car.
