The first step is to put the road wheels straight, then twist the
Steering Wheel right 180 degrees and lock the column using the
Ignition Lock Cylinder. Open the hood and unhook the negative
Battery Cable from the remote battery post, giving it two minutes to discharge the system reserve capacitor. On the back of the steering wheel, undo the screws for the speed control switch, then disconnect the related wire connectors but keep any remote radio switches attached. To take out the Driver
Air Bag, remove the bolts that hold it, lift it out, separate the air bag and horn wire connectors, as well as the 4-way connector if your radio has remote switches. Following that, take out the steering wheel and, if there's one present, remove the tilt lever as well. Gently separate the upper shroud from the lower shroud so you don't damage them, then loosen and remove the screws holding the lower shroud before you lift it off. Start by removing the connectors at the base of the clock spring, then unscrew the clock spring, noting its failure means you have to replace it straight away. Set the steering wheel at half turn (180°) to the right and close the lock on the steering column during installation. Fit the clock spring to the steering shaft, forcing the rotor down until it touches the inside, then use the mounting screws to hold it at 2.7 N.m. Route and secure the clock spring properly to the instrument panel harness's locking tabs. Attach the column shrouds back on and confirm they keep all wires in place and mount the tilt wheel release lever if you have that feature. Guide all the wires into the hub area of the steering wheel, attach the wheel with the flats in the hub lining up with the clock spring, tighten the wheel nut with 61 N.m (45 ft. lbs.) torque and be sure no leads are being clamped as you attach the wheel. Raise the steering column and place the steering wheel straight up (180° counterclockwise). Guide the speed control wires under the place where the air bag attaches, link the 4-way harness if you have remote radio switches and put it into the docking tab. Afterwards, fasten the horn lead wire and air bag lead wire to the air bag module, put the air bag into place and tighten the bolts with 7 to 9 N.m (65 to 85 in. lbs.). Once that's done, join the speed control wires to the switches and attach them in place, securing with 1.5 N.m (13 in. lbs.). Connecting the air bag system's negative cable remote terminal to the battery is not recommended until the system is tested and diagnosed.
