Chrysler 300M Clock Spring Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Maintain a Clock Spring Assembly on Chrysler 300M?
    A:
The first step is to put the road wheels straight, then twist the Steering Wheel right 180 degrees and lock the column using the Ignition Lock Cylinder. Open the hood and unhook the negative Battery Cable from the remote battery post, giving it two minutes to discharge the system reserve capacitor. On the back of the steering wheel, undo the screws for the speed control switch, then disconnect the related wire connectors but keep any remote radio switches attached. To take out the Driver Air Bag, remove the bolts that hold it, lift it out, separate the air bag and horn wire connectors, as well as the 4-way connector if your radio has remote switches. Following that, take out the steering wheel and, if there's one present, remove the tilt lever as well. Gently separate the upper shroud from the lower shroud so you don't damage them, then loosen and remove the screws holding the lower shroud before you lift it off. Start by removing the connectors at the base of the clock spring, then unscrew the clock spring, noting its failure means you have to replace it straight away. Set the steering wheel at half turn (180°) to the right and close the lock on the steering column during installation. Fit the clock spring to the steering shaft, forcing the rotor down until it touches the inside, then use the mounting screws to hold it at 2.7 N.m. Route and secure the clock spring properly to the instrument panel harness's locking tabs. Attach the column shrouds back on and confirm they keep all wires in place and mount the tilt wheel release lever if you have that feature. Guide all the wires into the hub area of the steering wheel, attach the wheel with the flats in the hub lining up with the clock spring, tighten the wheel nut with 61 N.m (45 ft. lbs.) torque and be sure no leads are being clamped as you attach the wheel. Raise the steering column and place the steering wheel straight up (180° counterclockwise). Guide the speed control wires under the place where the air bag attaches, link the 4-way harness if you have remote radio switches and put it into the docking tab. Afterwards, fasten the horn lead wire and air bag lead wire to the air bag module, put the air bag into place and tighten the bolts with 7 to 9 N.m (65 to 85 in. lbs.). Once that's done, join the speed control wires to the switches and attach them in place, securing with 1.5 N.m (13 in. lbs.). Connecting the air bag system's negative cable remote terminal to the battery is not recommended until the system is tested and diagnosed.
  • Q: How to Remove and Install a Clock Spring Assembly on Chrysler 300M?
    A:
First drive the front wheels in a straight line; then turn the Steering Wheel as far to the right as it will go and lock it with the Ignition Lock Cylinder. Raise the hood, disconnect the negative Battery Cable from the remote terminal, then give it two minutes for the reserve capacitor to discharge before removing the non-deployed part. Unscrew the mounting screws on the speed control switch from the back of the steering wheel and take out the wire connectors, while leaving remote radio switches on as necessary. Once the Driver Air Bag attaching bolts are removed, simply lift the air bag from the steering wheel and remove the air bag and horn wire connectors. If your steering wheel has remote radio switches, separate the 4-way connector between the clock spring and your wiring harness. You need to remove the steering wheel, the tilt wheel release lever and both shrouds to reach the clock spring wiring. Take apart the two and four-way connectors between the clock spring and the instrument panel wiring harness at the clock spring base, then undo the two screws and pull the entire assembly from the steering shaft, making sure to replace the clock spring if it is damaged. Prior to installation, make sure the steering wheel is halfway to the right (at 180 degrees) and secure the column with the ignition lock. Put the steering shaft clock spring in place and work the rotor down until it is properly seated, then secure the rotor to the steering shaft using the two screws tightened to 24 in. lbs. (2.7 Nm). Put the clock spring on the instrument panel harness, aligning all connections and locking them together. Put the shrouds on the steering column, making sure all wires are inside and if you have a tilt wheel, install the support cable and broken-out rod. Bring all wires through the main opening of the hub area on the steering wheel, place and tighten the steering wheel until its flats meet the clock spring and do not exceed 61 Nm (45 ft. lbs.) torque on the steering wheel nut. Turn the ignition lock cylinder and pull the steering wheel upward to a straight position. Set up the speed control wires under and behind the air bag mounting tabs and if you have remote radio switches, join the 4-way harness to the connector between the steering wheel and the clock spring, pushing it into the tab at 12 o'clock on the steering wheel back cover. Bring the horn lead wire and the air bag lead wire together, then attach the air bag module, air bag and tighten the bolts to 65-85 in. lbs. Attach the wires from the speed controls to the switches, place the switches and tighten the screws to 1.5 Nm (13 in. lbs.).
