Chrysler 300M Crankshaft Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Remove and Install a Crankshaft on Chrysler 300M?
    A:
Take out the engine from your vehicle and remove the Oil Pan, oil pickup tube, crankshaft damper, idler pulley for the accessory Drive Belt, all the Timing Belt covers (front) and the one for the front left side. After that, remove the Timing Belt Tensioner and timing belt and then take off the crankshaft sprocket. Ease the dowel pin from out of the crankshaft and take off both the oil pump and the rear crankshaft oil seal retainer. First, remove the caps labeled as connecting rod bearings, always making note of them for correct re-assembly and then remove the main bearing caps, making sure to do the same with them. Remove the crankshaft as the final step. First, install the crankshaft and push it all the way ahead, then slip the front thrust washer onto the points between the machined shelf of the No. 2 upper main bulk head and the crankshaft thrust surface. Turn the crankshaft back as far as possible, lubricate and set the rear thrust washer in the same way. Lubricate both sides of the lower main bearing rings with clean engine oil and steam clean the bolt holes and apply oil to them as well. Insert each main cap and tighten all bolts only by hand, following the correct order: inner main cap screws, windage tray screws and main cap tie screws. Tighten all inside main bearing cap bolts to 20 Nm, then turn them an additional 1/4 turn. Get the end play of the crankshaft, fit the connecting rods and check the side gap. Put in the windage tray, grease the bolt heads with motor oil and tighten them to 27 Nm followed by a 1/4 turn. Tighten all the main cap tie bolt every thread just under 28 Nm. Add the retainer for the rear crankshaft oil seal around the oil seal and the oil pump assembly afterward. Install a dowel pin in the crankshaft and the crankshaft sprocket, put on all three timing belt covers and finally attach the timing belt. Install and tighten the crankshaft damper and idler pulley for the accessory drive belt, next by installing the oil pickup tube, tightening its bolt to 28 Nm. After finishing everything, set the oil pan, put the engine pieces back in place and add enough oil to the engine crankcase.
