For the repair and service of the 42LE shift gear cable, ensure your vehicle is in park and turn the ignition key to LOCK. Before taking down the front access door, open the front panel, remove the under panel silencer and the column cover's screws. Head the column to its highest position, remove the tilt lever, remove the key and then lift the lower cover. After the cable is removed from the shift pin, take out the retainer clip from the conduit bracket, making certain the column tilts as high as it can go. Open the hood, then from inside the engine, unhook the gear shift cable from the bracket. Unplug the cable grommet from the firewall and pull the shift cable from within the car. Get the vehicle on a hoist, take off the fill tube bracket and turn the fill tube to find the shift cable clamp. Remove the cable's attachment from the bracket and its retaining nut and pull the assembly off its stud. Remove the shifter cable from both ends: the shift lever assembly at the transaxle and from the vehicle. Before you install, put the transaxle shift lever into "park," connect the cable to the shift lever and ensure the washer on the mounting stud is in place. Tighten the nut securely to 28 Nm (250 inch lbs.). Place the fill tube back where it was first and then tightly secure the fill tube bracket bolt. Install the "push pin" into the bracket, run the transaxle shift cable through the dash panel hole, put lubricant on the grommet and confirm it is upright in the hole. Fix the cable into the bracket under the dashboard and insert the gearshift between the a/c duct and the lower heat duct up to the steering column. inthe the steering column to the highest position, keeping the shift lever in "park." Link the shift cable to the shift cable conduit bracket and hold it there with a new clip and attach the cable to the attaching stud by snapping it on. Turn the steering wheel all the way down, move the column shifter to park and turn the adjuster so it clicks into the lock position, with the key out. Fit the upper steering column shroud, the lower shroud and the underpanel silencer/duct, after which you should test the shifter to see that it is not binding and that the starter doesn't crank except when the transmission is in park or neutral.
