  The first step to installing the brake light switch is to turn off the supplemental restraint system by unplugging the negative cable from the battery and leaving the system to discharge for 2 minutes. The switch plunger can only adjust once, so you have to replace it if you take the switch out of the mounting bracket. The pedal travels closer to you under the foot and should be kept held down. Make sure the tabs lining the collar of the brake lamp switch are over the keyed hole in the switch bracket that's part of the steering column. First, insert the tabs through the keyed hole until the switch housing fits against the bracket firmly and afterward, turn the switch housing 30 degrees counterclockwise to make sure the tabs grab the bracket. Before finishing the plunger adjustment, avoid releasing or engaging the brake pedal. Release the brake, do not raise it, then twist the plunger adjustment release lever so it is in place and aligned with the brake lamp switch connector receptacle. When this positioning is complete, the brake lamp switch is moved to its final length and can no longer be changed; unless your job is done correctly, you will need to install a new switch. After that, replace the wire harness connector at the brake lamp switch and fix the battery negative cable back into place.

  First, disable the air bag system by removing the negative battery cable and disconnecting it, then leave everything alone for two minutes to allow the capacitor to discharge. Look for the brake lamp switch next to the support bracket at the bottom of the steering column. Disconnect the wire harness connector from the brake lamp switch, then twist the switch housing clockwise about 30 degrees so that the switch locking tabs line up with the keyhole in the switch mount. Use your fingers to pull the switch straight back out of the keyed hole in the bracket. If at any time you need to remove the switch from the bracket, be sure to get a new switch. Cast the departed brake lamp switch away.
