Loosen the bolt holding the camshaft sprocket in place, but don't remove it yet, as it should be snug around the sprocket. Make certain that the timing chain tensioners are in place before you take off the camshaft sprockets. Fix the timing chain with Special Tool 9867 against the tensioner arm and guide. Only grip the tube part of the camshaft when using pliers and don't touch the lobes or sprocket areas. Adjustable pliers should be used to hold the camshaft when you take out the bolt and sprocket. Let the camshaft rotate 15° to the right until there is no load on the valves. Start loosening the camshaft bearing cap retaining bolts outside and continue until none of the force is on the bearings. Make sure not to apply force to the caps to prevent serious damage.
