Chrysler Cirrus has CV Boot of the car located in the Constant Velocity joints, which is an important part aimed at shielding the latter. This flexible rubber or plastic boot contains the proper amount of grease for the CV joints as well as enclose the joint punting to avoid any accumulation of dirt within it. Many Chrysler Cirrus use several kinds of CV joints, Rzeppa joints for outer ends of the Cirrus, while tripod or double offset joints are used in the inner ends. The outer joints are for hinges in extreme angles while the inboard joints allow for changes in shaft lengths with suspension movement. It is important for the CV Boot to be checked on a regular basis since, if there is a tear, or crack, it may affect the CV on the car thus causing its malfunctioning.

Chrysler Cirrus CV Boot Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Remove and Install a CV Boot on the Driveshaft on Chrysler Cirrus?
    A:
The inner tripod joint seal boot can be removed from the driveshaft only after the driveshaft assembly has been disconnected from the vehicle. Open the tripod joint with a clevis under the landing gear and remove the large and small clamps from the joint boots. Now slide the boots off the tripod joint and lower shaft. Before you pull out the tripod joint housing from the spider assembly, hold the bearings so they don't come loose. Now, take out the snap ring that links the spider assembly to the interconnecting shaft and remove the assembly; if you meet resistance, gently tap around the spider with a brass drift to avoid hitting the outside bearings. Check the spider assembly, tripod joint housing and shaft for signs of too much wear, because worn pieces would mean you would need to replace the whole assembly. During installation, match the old rubber with the new one by using silicone rubber for high-temperature situations and hytrel for standard situation. Slide the clamp alongside the shaft and place the new sealing boot with the raised bead in its groove on the shaft. Fasten the spider on the interconnecting shaft, ensuring it is seated straight before putting in the snap ring. Apply half of the grease that comes with the service package to the tripod housing and put the other half into the sealing boot. Match and verticalize the tripod housing over the spider assembly and interconnecting shaft, then secure the sealing boot onto the interconnecting shaft with crimper Special Tool C-4975-A, to ensure there are no marks or abnormalities on the seals. To vent the inner tripod joint, insert a trim stick between the tripod joint and sealing boot and press it down so it lies flat against the housing and doesn't hit the boot. Align the interconnecting shaft with the tripod housing and put the trim stick down, then put the tri-lobal boot into the tripod housing to have its three sides line up with the housing recesses. When done, hold the sealing boot securely in place with either crimp clamps using Special Tool C-4975-A or the low profile latching clamps with Snap-On YA3050. Then install the driveshaft to the vehicle.
  • Q: How to Replace a CV Boot on the Outer CV Joint on Chrysler Cirrus?
    A:
Prior to changing the CV boot, disconnect the driveshaft from the vehicle. Remove the big clamp that holds the CV boot in place on the CV joint housing and the little clamp that secures it around the interconnecting shaft, then take off the CV boot from outside the joint housing. Clean the spot, expose that part of the outer CV joint and connecting shaft, secure the shaft in a vise with protectors and carefully knock the joint free from the inside circlip. The circlip should be removed, then the CV boot slid off after that. Look at the exterior CV joint and the connecting joint for wear; if parts are worn, you must replace the whole driveshaft assembly because only a new one can be used. During installation, slide the end of the CV boot over the interconnecting shaft until you are certain the raised bead lines up with the groove. Place the alignment guides of the outer CV's splines onto the adjacent shaft and slowly push the outer joint onto the shaft. Work the stub axle up by gently hammering the end until it fully engages the circlip. Apply half the grease from the CV boot service package to the outside CV joint assembly housing and use the remaining grease in the boot. Attach the CV boot to the interconnecting shaft with crimper Special Tool C-4975-A and check that the seal is not warped. Insert the CV boot into the CV joint groove on the customer end and zip it in place with the same crimping tool you used before. In the end, put the driveshaft assembly back onto the vehicle.
