The Control Arm in Chrysler PT Cruiser class of automobiles is a profound component that connects the frame of the automobile to the wheels; it supports other suspension parts such as shocks and springs. These arms rotate independently based on the road characteristics and enable the wheels to perform the up and down movement. Different types of control arms exist in automobiles, and they all incorporate bushings where they are joined to the framework and ball joints where they are joined to the knuckle or axle. The next generations of PT Cruiser might have more rigid cast iron, or aluminum control arms that are strong and also lightweight. All these components are crucial for wheel alignment, road stability, and consequent equal wearing out of the tires. A set of performance control arms can be used by those desiring a stiffer setup as well as options for tuning and changes needed for fast driving or use for modified vehicles.

Chrysler PT Cruiser Control Arm Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Remove and Replace a Control Arm on Chrysler PT Cruiser?
    A:
First, place the lower control arm (1) where it goes in the front suspension crossmember (3). Attach the rear bolt (4) to both the crossmember and frame rail and then do the same thing with the front bolt (2). With the lower control arm free from weight, close the rear bolt (4) firmly until it reaches 250 Nm (185 ft. lbs.) and back out the front bolt (2) until it's at 170 Nm (125 ft. lbs.). Once that's done, fit the ball joint stud (3) into the end of your knuckle (1) so the slots match up and then attach a NEW ball joint stud pinch bolt (4) and nut (2) to secure it at 95 Nm (70 ft. lbs.). Replace the engine torque strut, ensure the engine mounting is aligned and separate the bolts one by one. Install the washer (4) on the stud from the torque strut bolt at the crossmember and put the pencil strut (3) at the right front corner of the crossmember and the body. Add the mounting nuts (1, 3), tightening them to 52 Nm (38 ft. lbs.). After that, place the drive-belt splash shield (3) and hold it in position with fasteners (4) attached to the body (2) and fastener (5) to the front suspension crossmember (6). Remove if needed, then set the front fascia fasteners (1) into place on the body lower reinforcement and fasten the wheel house splash shield (1) to the drive belt splash shield (3) using the supplied fastener (2). Line up the forward parts of the stabilizer bar (5), clean the threads of the link bolts (7) and use Mopar(R) Lock And Seal or a similar product. Put the stabilizer bar link assembly (3, 4, 6, 7) on each side of the vehicle, but only push link bolt (7) through the lower bushing (6), stabilizer bar (5), inner link bushing (4), lower control arm (2) and into the upper retainer and bushing (3) to start. Fix the tire and wheel assembly (1) in position, tighten the wheel nuts to 135 Nm (100 ft. lbs.) and then lower the vehicle. Standing with the car on road level, turn the upper nut (3) and wrench together against the stabilizer bar link bolt (7), moving it to 29 Nm (22 ft. lbs.). Should the bolts have been unwound, rewind them to 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.) and do a wheel alignment as necessary.
  • Q: How to Install the Front Lower Control Arm on Chrysler PT Cruiser?
    A:
The lower control arm goes in first by being placed in the front suspension crossmember. Put the bolt through the rear lower control arm and crossmember, but not all the way tight and repeat for the front. Once the lower control arm doesn't move, tighten the bolt at the rear by 250 Nm and the bolt at the front by 170 Nm. After that, place the ball joint stud into the knuckle so that the bolt hole matches the notch, secure it with a fresh pinch bolt and nut and tighten the nut to 95 Nm. After picking the correct lower control arm, put in the engine torque strut and adjust it to align. On the torque strut stud, fit a washer, then set the pencil strut on both the crossmember and body and screw on the mounting nuts until they have a tightness of 52 Nm. Connect the drive-belt splash shield and its fasteners, as well as the pad that efficiently secures the wheel house splash shield to the drive belt splash shield. Line up the ends of the stabilizer bar forward, clean any debris off the stabilizer bar link bolts, then put Mopar Lock And Seal on the threads of those bolts. Start by inserting the lower stabilizer bar bushing from beneath on each side, going through the bar, the inner link bushing, lower control arm and into the upper nut/bushing on both vehicles and don't overtighten. Attach the wheel assembly by putting on the tire, then tighten the wheel nuts to 135 Nm. Lift the front of the vehicle, then lower each stabilizer bar to its curb height and tighten the links by holding the retainer and turning the bolt counterclockwise to 29 Nm. Then, if these bolts were loose, tighten them to 25 Nm and perform a wheel alignment following the manufacturer's instructions.
